The Underground is an innovative church concept that embodies some of the best features of both a world class nonprofit and a vibrant church family. There are several opportunities for young, energetic and curious interns. We offer internships in all our departments as well as a community that not only delivers marketable skills but also meaningful friendship and genuine care. We do not just use our intern; while they do work, our commitment to our interns is that you will get as much as you give. We see our internships as much about serving and developing you as we do you serving our organizational mission.
While we are flexible and each person is considered individually, we generally like our interns to serve between 10-20 hours a week, for a period of 3-12 months. You can expect a weekly development time (where we pour into you), a real education into spiritual leadership, nonprofit team dynamics and nonprofit management. You can also expect to make a meaningful contribution to the Tampa Underground and its mission, as well as learn tangible skills that will serve you for years to come.
If you agree wholeheartedly with the Manifesto, believe in the mission and work of the Underground, and want to work and serve more closely on our staff team, there are a few focused internship opportunities available that offer different developmental deliverables.
- Finance and Non-Profit Administration
- Facilities and Event Management
- Communication, Marketing and Media
- Film, Graphic and Web Design
Interns will be considered members of the staff team, and therefore expected to conduct themselves with the same professionalism and integrity both inside and outside the office. In addition to the skill acquisition (from your departmental focus) and general education (from being part of the team), we will invest in each intern cohort instruction on the following developmental concepts:
Passion: Coming to work every day believing in what you do; making that known through your spiritual focus, enthusiasm, and love for people and tasks.
Teamwork: How to work together with others by appreciating their differences and supporting the common cause.
Work Ethic & Rest: Working hard and leading others by serving with commitment, and giving all we have to what we do. Being tired at the end of the day, and finding rest at the end of the week.
Personal & Professional Humility: Growing by always learning/ being open to learning from your mistakes and the people around you.
Professionalism: How to stay relational and accessible but also to do things in a way that honors and dignifies the importance of the work. Things like being on time, responding to emails, always doing what we say we will, dressing and composing ourselves in a certain way, keeping a clean work space and order in our work environment, etc.
Indirect Leadership & Management: How to love and lead people from behind the scenes, through policy and from the place of secondary leadership. Also, how to grow your team but recruiting and caring for talented people.
Time Management: How to lead yourself, keep a task list and calendar, as well as saying no and yes, prioritizing and the tyranny of the urgent.
Leaning on your Strengths: Finding and working from your strengths. Leaning on others where you are weak, while refusing to give in fully to those weaknesses. Finding your place of strength and leading not only in your own work but leading the team from that place.
